Fourteen top four seeded teams made the Sweet 16 and three # 12 seed upset # 5 seed in the first two rounds of 2009 NCAA Basketball Tournament March 19-22.

Advancing to the Sweet 16 to pursue their offers have been March Madness # 1 seed Pittsburgh, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Louisville, # 2-seeded Duke, Memphis, Oklahoma and Michigan State, # 3 seed Villanova, Missouri, Syracuse and Kansas, and # 4 seed Xavier and Gonzaga. Only # 4 seed Wake Forest was eliminated by Cleveland State # 13 and # 4 seed Washington was eliminated by the # 5 seed Purdue.

The three # 12 seeds that pulled disorders includes Wisconsin # 5 seed in the State Florida, Illinois Western Kentucky during the Utah and Arizona. Among other changes Dayton # 11 to # 6 West Virginia and Michigan # 10 # 7 LSU. Only one game went to time extra at 9 No. Siena eliminated # 8 Ohio State in double overtime.

There were two eruptions horrible # 1 Connecticut flooded poor # 16 Chattanooga by 56 points, 103-47, and No. 1 North Carolina made short work of Radford # 16 for 43 points, 101-58. Connecticut torn # 9 Texas A & M 26 (92-66) in his second competition. Apart from Siena double overtime in the state of Ohio, 6 other teams won games with a basket or less. Including Wisconsin, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Marquette, Purdue and Gonzaga. Only Purdue to Sweet 16.

A single seed in double figures – # 12 Arizona would be in the Sweet 16. When you add the 16 points of planting, the total 49 set a record for the lowest, beating the old record of 50 set in 1989. The seeded teams in first place hit hardest this year was the Midwest Regional that saw Wake Forest # 4, # 5 Utah, West Virginia, # 6, # 7 Boston College and # 8 Ohio State will not be eliminated in their first game.

The Big East Conference has become the elite of this year's NCAA record 5 teams among the final Sweet 16: Louisville, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Villanova and Syracuse. North Carolina, bound for Kentucky victories over NCAA Tournament (98) with its victory over LSU.

Here are the 2009 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 Semi Regional Finals-Ups:

Eastern Region:

# 1 Pittsburgh # 4 Xavier – Thursday, March 26th
# 2 # 3 Duke vs. Villanova – Thursday, March 26th

West Regional:

# 1 Connecticut vs. Purdue # 5 – Thursday, March 26th
# 2 vs. # 3 Memphis, Missouri – Thursday, March 26th

South Regional:

# 1 North Carolina vs. Gonzaga # 4 – Friday, March 27th
# 2 Oklahoma against Syracuse # 3 – Friday, March 27th

Midwest Regional:

# 1 Louisville vs. Arizona # 12 – Friday, March 27th
# 2 vs. Michigan State # 3 Kansas – Friday, March 27th

Hence, to the Elite 8?

Consider these historic cold hard facts:

1) When you know that no team under a seed # 4 won the championship for 20 consecutive years, you may want to remove from Purdue # 5 and # 12 in Arizona.

# 1 seed leaving Pittsburgh Connecticut, North Carolina and Louisville, # 2 seed Duke, Memphis, Oklahoma and Michigan State, # 3 seed Villanova, Missouri

Syracuse, Kansas, and # 4 seed Xavier and Gonzaga.

2) Only three No. 1 seeds are likely to reach the 4 final, as only 70% before # 1 seed in the Elite 8. The chances that this is Pittsburgh, Connecticut, North Carolina or Louisville will not part of the elite 8.

3) It is striking that only one or two No. 1 seeds have allowed the final 4 to 18 of the past 24. Last year was an exception, because all four # 1 seeds made the Final 4 for the first time.

Morehead State eliminated Alabama State 58-43 in the game game for the 64th slot in the tournament.
